Located on both the Outer Banks and the mainland, Currituck County is rich in heritage with many historically significant sites. Since it was founded in 1668, Currituck citizens have cultivated their own identity filled with history and culture.
At Currituck Heritage Park, visit the Whalehead Club and see what life was like on the Outer Banks in the 1920s. Boasting art nouveau architectural styling and accented with Tiffany lighting fixtures, cork-tiled floors, brass duck heads and waterlilly hardware, this magnificent structure stood isolated for years on these remote barrier islands and was originally used as a hunt club.
Currituck County's original Courthouse was constructed in the early 1700s. The building was replaced in 1842 and remodeled in 1898. It currently houses the governmental administrative offices.
Located adjacent to the Courthouse is the historic jail, which was built in 1776. The jail is still one of the oldest jails still standing in North Carolina.
